State Senator Saud Anwar

Dr. Saud Anwar

My story would only be possible in America—the place where I found my calling. I decided to run for and win the 3rd District State Senate seat to give back to the country that has given me and my family so much. I’m working for the 3rd District and making sure I can change Connecticut for the better.
The youngest of five children, I came to this country as a young man to follow my dreams. My father, a farmer, instilled in me the importance of working hard. My mother taught me kindness and how we all have a responsibility to take care of each other.
These lessons inspired me to become a doctor—a dream that took me to the United States at 24 years old, and to attend Yale University School of Medicine. I rolled up my sleeves and got to work, just like my father taught me, and completed my training early to get right to work.
After graduation, I asked myself, “What good is a physician if they can’t take care of their community?” I knew that caring for a patient while ignoring the community around them would only treat the symptom. That is why I went on to get a Master’s in Public Health and have worked to make Connecticut a better place for everyone.
Along the way, I met my wife—a physician as well, and one of the best in the world (if you ask me). We moved to South Windsor where we raised our two sons.
Looking to serve my community outside the hospital, I was elected to the Town Council in 2011, and became Mayor of South Windsor in 2013, a position I am proud to currently hold.
As Mayor, I worked with a team of people to make South Windsor a healthier community by reducing access to tobacco for teenagers, creating walking trails, working with restaurants to provide quality food, starting a farmer’s market and educating our schools on healthy eating.
As Mayor, I also worked to make our town more environmentally friendly.
By working with our school children and conscientious adults, we have been able to minimize the use of single use plastic bags in South Windsor and increase recycling throughout our community. I also created the first permanent energy committee to focus on sustainability and helped South Windsor be recognized as a sustainable town.
Now, I’m working for the 3rd District:
  • Expanding access to and lowering the cost of health care
  • Defending a woman’s right to choose
  • Fighting to put an end to the opioid crisis
  • Making higher education more affordable and increasing vocation training opportunities
  • Revitalizing our economy and keeping young people in Connecticut
  • Making our state more affordable for working people and families
  • Protecting Connecticut residents from Trump’s agenda
  • Combating gun violence and opposing the NRA (I’m proud to say that the only “F” I’ve ever received in my life was from the NRA!)
I’ve lived my entire life in service of others—my patients, family and neighbors across Connecticut. It’s what my parents taught me, and the only way I know.  I am honored to serve our entire great state in the State Senate.
In gratitude,
Dr. Saud Anwar
